Russian authorities are getting ready to improve the image of Roma. [РБК] →

The Russian Federation’s government in 2013 intends to begin improving the image of Roma and their process to socio-economic integration. The cabinet has already approved a comprehensive plan that will incorporate the ethnic group in a number of cultural, educational and business projects. The newspaper “Известия” (Proceedings) writes on 20 February.
According to a government source, this is the only “comprehensive ethnic-oriented programme” in Russia. “There is not such a programme for other ethnicities. Roma, especially, are adrift and in need of care in the nation-state”, said the newspaper.
The document provides the establishment of television films and programmes, which will tell the history of the Russian Roma and the “problems of integrating into a modern society”. In addition, the government will organise a press conference with Roma leaders from the autonomies.
The ministry of regional development and the regional governors have mandated to help the Roma that would like to do business. Potential entrepreneurs will be trained and advised. In addition, Roma businessmen will receive benefits on the receipt of communication channels and the purchase of office equipment. Free legal advice centres will be open for them; however, for those without documents, there will be a simplified process organised to issue passports.
A separate unit of government will be designed to address the problem of neglect and lack of education of Roma children. A special alphabet-learning-book will be developed to help teach them the Russian language. Younger students will receive textbooks on the Romani language. In placed where Roma live, youth clubs will be opened, which will teach traditional crafts, such as the blacksmith business, horse breeding, sewing, embroidery and weaving.
The documentation notes that under the members of the Roma community, there will be tightened control to help stop the spread of drugs.
According to the national census of 2010, there are more than 200 thousand Roma living in Russia.

This is a story from a book I own called “Словарь языка крымских цыган – Dictionary of the Crimean [Romani] Language”. Below the cut is the story first in the Crimean Romani language, in Russian Cyrillic and then transliterated, and then the Russian translation from the book, and following that my English translation.
My English translation is really funky, and I apologise, but the way it’s written is a bit unusual to me too, but I didn’t want to write it completely differently.
Also, this is a spooky one, and very appropriate for the upcoming Hallowe’en holiday (which is a month away, haha).
PS: The story was originally written with stress notation on the words, so I have done my best to leave them in for anyone who is studying the language. It’s immensely helpful. Also, apologies if I mispelt anything, especially in the Russian translation text.
This book is only in Russian and it’s rather rare. However, it’s one of the very few resources on the Crimean Romani language.

Now everyone can quickly receive answers to all questions about romani passports and apply for a passport online. For that it is possible to fill application, provide necessary documents and pay a fee online. Now everything could be done without leaving home.
Website will also inform how to find official passport department representatives, so everyone interested in applying in a traditional way could do so as well. This way (trough the official representative) will be somewhat cheaper for an applicant (except the beginning period of website launch).
In order to increace the speed of passportization programme we are planning to offer every passport owner the right to promote the idea of romani passport with status of passportization programme partner. Everyone owning a passport right now is already granted with this privileged status for expressed trust to the programme.
This status could be obtained for free during limited time only as a part of our wesite launching activities. For that an interested person should apply for a passport during launching action (for this period there will be a lowered fee for limited amount of passports approximately during one month)
In the future partners will be able to receive compensation for their active promotion of romani passport idea and for consulting regarding passport obtaining procedure.

VADIM KOLPAKOV: TAKING ROMANI MUSIC FROM THE VOLGA ACROSS THE ATLANTIC →
Born and raised on the banks of the river Volga in Russia, world renowned 7-string guitarist Vadim Kolpakov is one of the most prominent Romani musicians of his generation.
Starting from an early age and inspired by a musical family, his musical journey would take him out of his home town and eventually his home country. Now living in North Carolina, Kolpakov has toured all over the world with many ensembles including the famous “Kolpakov Trio.”
Arguably the pinnacle of his career so far came in 2008 when he toured with Madonna on her “Sticky and Sweet” tour of 2008-09.
The mercurial musician had the generosity to share some of his time to discuss all things Vadim Kolpakov, starting with where it all began.
Vadim recalled “My hometown of Saratov is in central Russia on the river Volga. My family is still there but I have not been back since 2009.
“Growing up in a Roma community in the city was OK in general. Just like in Eastern Europe, we suffered from some minor discrimination, things like name calling, but generally it was OK.”
Kolpakov continued, and explained that musical inspiration was never far away in his childhood.
“I was raised in a family who liked to perform. My father would lay the guitar and sing at parties while my mother would dance. Naturally, I started to follow their lead and play the guitar, sing and dance as well. At the time, break dancing was very popular and I was pretty good at it. Rap and hip-hop were also gaining some popularity.”
This was only the very beginning, as his talent and curiosity to learn more would take him to the Russian capital.
“However, it was my uncle Alexander who was the example to follow if I really wanted to be an artist. At the age of 14 I went to go and live with him in Moscow where I would learn the guitar. For six years I practiced every day with him. It was like my university. I studied at the Romani Performing Arts School Gilori and I performed at the Romen Theater.”

Но Ляля понимала, что, наконец, нашла то, что искала всю жизнь: тех, кто затрагивал потаенные струны ее души. Фотографируя их, она прославляла их образ жизни и в то же время создавала себе реноме художника. Ляля была настойчива и продолжала снимать, и цыгане позволили этой женщине делать свое дело, ведь она казалась им похожей на них самих. Nomadic people do not enjoy being photographed, and their trust not easy to win over. But Lyalya understood that when she finally found what she was looking for all her life: those that touched the hidden strings of her soul. Photographing them she praised their lives and at the same time built herself a reputation as an artist. Lyalya was persistent and continued to photograph, and the Roma allowed this woman to do her job, because they saw her as one of their own. They allowed her into their world, which Lyalya continued to explore for the next 15 years.

Единственный в мире цыганский театр – Московский музыкально-драматический театр “Ромэн” – отмечает 80-летие, сообщает ИТАР-ТАСС. 15 декабря 1931 года совсем ещё молодая труппа цыганских актёров показала зрителям свой первый спектакль по пьесе драматурга Александра Германо “Жизнь на колёсах”.
“Этот первый профессиональный цыганский коллектив был создан по инициативе и с помощью выдающихся деятелей российской культуры, а первыми актёрами стали цыганские юноши и девушки, приехавшие в Москву из разных уголков страны. Профессиональному мастерству они обучались непосредственно в этом театре при участии опытных столичных актеров. Я так же начал этот путь к искусству”, - рассказал художественный руководитель театра “Ромэн”, актёр, режиссёр и певец, народный артист СССР Николай Сличенко.
Свои первые спектакли актёры играли на цыганском языке, а в их репертуаре были в основном пьесы из жизни цыган. Однако через несколько лет они стали давать спектакли на русском языке, что позволило театру значительно разнообразить и расширить свою афишу за счёт русской и зарубежной классики, а также пьес современных авторов.
Николай Сличенко отметил, что большую роль в истории “Ромэн” сыграл замечательный актёр и режиссёр Михаил Яншин. Хотя он руководил театром всего лишь около шести лет, однако именно Яншин определил будущее коллектива, его художественное своеобразие и тематическую значимость постановок. На его сцене ставились спектакли по произведениям Пушкина, Льва Толстого, Лескова, Горького, а также Гольдони, Гюго, Мериме, Тагора, Гарсиа Лорки и других писателей.
Естественно, большую роль играли также фольклорно-музыкальные традиции этого своеобразного коллектива. Сегодня в его труппе 78 человек. Среди актёров, особенно нового поколения, много выпускников цыганской студии при самом театре, а также специальных курсов ГИТИСа и Щукинского училища. В числе их педагогов был и Николай Сличенко, который, окончив театральный институт, стал удачно выступать и в режиссуре. Среди самых знаменитых его спектаклей – “Живой труп” по пьесе Льва Толстого и романтическая эпопея “Мы – цыгане”, ставшая “визитной карточкой” театра “Ромэн”.
Свой 80-летний юбилей – примечательную дату в театральной летописи России – труппа “Ромэн” решила отмечать 28 декабря в своём театре на Ленинградском проспекте. В этот вечер артисты будут также поздравлять с 60-летием творческой деятельности Николая Сличенко – своего художественного руководителя, вся жизнь которого неразрывно связана с этим по-прежнему пользующимся большой популярностью коллективом.

Moscow"s Romen Theatre turns 80 →
The Moscow-based Romen Theatre, which is the oldest and the most famous of Romani theatres in the world, is celebrating its 80th anniversary.
The first Romani performers were recruited from young people and many couldn’t even read or write.
Nowadays, the theatre’s repertoire features 14 productions, including classical ones and modern drama.
Its company has toured many countries of the world winning high acclaim from millions of audiences.

My notes on this! I remember reading somewhere that Romani actors from the Romen Theatre performed in this film, and if so, I believe they are the dancers and singers in the background. I currently cannot find where I read that though.
Furthermore, as most films about Romanies, yes this is romanticised; however, I would also like to note that they are not shown living a beautiful and marvellous life. They are shown, in full colour, trekking through mud and grime, and dealing with the local law and etc.
I personally do not like the character Rada very much, because she does at times seem to have “magic powers”, but I can only recall one seen somewhere at the start of this.
It is otherwise a unique film from the Soviet Era, very beautiful to look at, and the traditional Romani songs are performed wonderfully. Every scene looks like the paintings and postcards we have been sharing here in the recent weeks.
[TL;DR] So, yes, romanticised, but to me, a non-Romani, they are portrayed quite differently than I expected them to be. Have a watch if you like.
I’m going to go ahead and re-watch it now, since my Russian is so silly I did not understand a lot of what was going on!
