В Ужгороді ромських студентів залучать до практичної роботи / Roma students in Uzhgorod are attracted to practical work [Закарпаття онлайн] →

On 20 September, 2012, a meeting was held by representatives of the international fund “Renaissance” and Roma students who are enrolled in the fund’s scholarship programme.
Roman Romanov, who is the head of the programme “Rule of Law”, says that the organisation “wants to see the development of the Roma communities, involvement of the youth, who has studied and trained for the educational programme. Today lacks an established co-oporation between local governments and young people who have been educated in different subjects, primarily with lawyers. We want to establish this co-operation so that graduates may continue being involved in work”, said Roman Romanov.
Roman Romanov further on said, in particular, this: “From 2008 to 2012, 45 students from the Transcarpathian oblast are working in this programme. It is necessary to determine whether all these students could find a job in their field, what problems they had and how they realised their rights at work. It is a mistake to believe that the basis of life is the financial capital, because for humans and human resources, knowledge is much more important. Therefore, the international fund “Renaissance” and the programme “Rule of Law” are actively working with Roma community organisations on location and with agencies of local municipalities to strengthen work in Romani communities, drawing attention to work with the Roma youths”.
The meeting was attended by Olha Zhmurko, the manager of the programme “Rule of Law”, representatives from the charity fund “Growth”, public human rights organization “Vested”, representatives from Roma NGO organisations and Roma students enrolled in the educational programmes.
“Бишужы / Bišužy (Impure)” Toporov
This is a story from a book I own called “Словарь языка крымских цыган – Dictionary of the Crimean [Romani] Language”. Below the cut is the story first in the Crimean Romani language, in Russian Cyrillic and then transliterated, and then the Russian translation from the book, and following that my English translation.
My English translation is really funky, and I apologise, but the way it’s written is a bit unusual to me too, but I didn’t want to write it completely differently.
Also, this is a spooky one, and very appropriate for the upcoming Hallowe’en holiday (which is a month away, haha).
PS: The story was originally written with stress notation on the words, so I have done my best to leave them in for anyone who is studying the language. It’s immensely helpful. Also, apologies if I mispelt anything, especially in the Russian translation text.
This book is only in Russian and it’s rather rare. However, it’s one of the very few resources on the Crimean Romani language.
Цигани Закарпаття відзначають міжнародний день ромського Голокосту / Roma in Transcarpathia observe the International Day for the Roma [and Sinte] Holocaust [Закарпаття Онлайн] →
On this day, 67 years ago, Hitler’s regime committed a horrific crime against humanity, slaughtering thousands of innocent men, women and children in the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp. Their only “fault” was that they were Roma [and Sinte].

During WWII, the Nazis deprived life for hundreds of thousands of Roma [and Sinte] across Europe. In Ukraine, Roma were among the first victims of the shootings at Babi Yar. They suffered especially cruel persecutions in Crimea and the Carpathians, Vinnytsiya and Odessa, Sumy and the Cherkassy regions.
“Today, the International Day of the Roma [and Sinte] Holocaust, our hearts fill with pain and compassion. In sorrow, we honour the memory of the innocent victims and pray that the Lord grant their souls eternal rest”, says the head of the NGO ‘Romani Cherhen’ (Roma Star), Myroslav Horvat. The regime’s crimes against humanity are not forgiven. Ukraine strongly condemns any manifestations of xenophobia, racism, intolerance and discrimination on ethnic, cultural, religious and other grounds.
Today Ukraine is in the extremely important process of restoring the historical truth and justice, says Horvat. Only through truth, through the exposure and condemnation of crimes of totalitarianism—both Nazi and Communist—can we protect ourselves and our future generations from repeating the horrors of the past. The genocide of the Roma [and Sinte] has become an integral part of our national memory. We realise this is our common grief, our common tragedy.
Roma vluchten naar ‘reservaat’ (PressEurop)
Translated from Dutch:
Of all the minorities living in the Ukraine, the Roma are undoubtedly the worst off. While many of them, on the eve of the European Football Championships, have been driven from their camps, the majority are still living in miserable conditions in slums on the outskirts of major cities.
by - Alexandra Malachovská
In the Transcarpathian city of Berehove, on the edge of the European Union [on the border with Hungary], hundreds of Roma live behind a concrete wall. They live in unspeakable poverty in shacks they have built of wood and earth.
Here large families live in a space with an unbearable stench. The moldy and cracked walls are covered with rags and pieces of cardboard. There are holes in the ceiling, a floor missing, and pieces of plastic that serve as a window. This community - as echoed by human rights organizations in Ukraine - is seen by everyone as a burden.
Just before the Euro Football 2012 was launched in Kiev, in the suburb of Bereznaky, another Roma camp was razed. Probably because the residents had built shacks along the railroad where thousands of supporters would pass by on the train….

Children bitten by rats in an Uzhhorod Roma settlement (Закарпаття онлайн) →
28 June, rats bit two children at night in a Roma settlement on the street of Hranitniy in Uzhhorod (micro-region of Radvanka). Amongst the victims of the rodent bites was an infant, whose face, arms and legs were bitten.
Serena Horvat, a young mother of three, had the electricity to her home cut off a day before these events due to debt. According to the Roma, this was what lead to this horrible event.
Mykola Baloh says that he brought the victims to a doctor and helped them acquire the necessary medications for the children. He also proposed to the Uzhhorod workers at REM a solution to the debt issue, by splitting the debt into several payments. However, they chose not to meet with him.
Slavyava elder Matviy Balint
29.06.2012 repeat 02.07.2012
We are closely following how the Roma of our country live.
In our programme, we will talk about today’s Roma of the city Svalyava.
Since 1995, Matviy Oleksandrovich Balint is the elder of the Romani settlement. For three consecutive runs, he is the respected Rom and deputy for the city of Slavyava and for the council of representatives of the Romani community.
His main job is overseeing the improvement of Romani life: finding work for hard working hands, improving living standards, building houses, helping large families, and widows. The criterion for the evaluation of his work is that in the past seventeen years, no Roma were arrested for criminal activities.
History. The Romani community of Slavyava has been living in the city for 250 years. Their main trades were breeding horses, small trade, and of course, music.
In the last few years, there were big changes happening in the Romani community. A street committee was elected, and general meetings are held regularly to restore order and prevent crime.
For the first time in Uzhhorod, a Roma woman was awarded "Mother - Heroine" →

As “The Transcarpathia Hour” has already reported that, yesterday, 20 June, a solemn ceremony was held in a small hall of Uzhhorod City Council, honouring women of the Transcarpathian region whom were given the honorary title of “Mother - Heroine” by the president of Ukraine. Ten women received the award from all over the country: from Tyachiv, Mizhhir, and Mukachevo districts.
In the city of Uzhhorod, this honorary title was awarded to the Roma woman Klara Yosypivna Baloh, who bore and raised ten children. This was also the first time this award was presented to Roma in Ukraine.
(Myroslav Horváth)
Video in Ukrainian. I can’t translate, but I can give the gist:
Interviews with Ukrainian Roma, saying why they need the same rights as everyone else. They can also have discotheques and run business, etc etc. They say how much they wish to have respect, to be treated well.
Firewood was distributed to Transcarpathian Roma from the foundation “Renaissance” (Photos) →
The action was financed by the programme “Roma of Ukraine” by the international foundation “Renaissance”. Myroslav Horvat, the expert of the programme board of “Roma of Ukraine”, controlled the due course of the handing out of wood. On-site distribution was by the members was observed by Uzhhorod district’s women’s NGO “Karmelita”, including its chairman Anzhelika Lakatosh.
In February, 2012, these supplies were held for Roma people in other locations of Transcarpathia, in particular Uzhhorod and the Uzhhorod district.
With the words of Horvat, such action is necessary, as the winter became very cold, but there is practically little wood around the Roma camps to heat homes and cook.

You aren’t people - you need to be killed
“You are not people – you need to be killed” with these words, “Golden Eagle” held a regular practice in a Roma camp in Uzhhorod.
Traditionally, for many of our fellow Roma, this is a community which many of them would prefer not to remember. For one, they are all associated with theft, divination and scams. Folk wisdom kindly reminds us with sayings, such as “you lie like a Gypsy”. And yet, there is a tendency observed to further level the positive image of Roma in our lives. In Romantic films as “Gypsy” or “The Gypsy Camp Goes to the Heavens” have sunk into oblivion, and today’s Roma, no matter what politicians say, always to be remember on the eve of elections, discriminated against our fellow members of society.
Our site so far has not been able to learn the reasons behind the pogroms in the Roma camp on the streets of Hranitiy and Marka Vovchka in the Uzhhorod village of Radvanka. According to the locals, two buses of “Berkut” exploded at seven in the morning, 11 January, on the territory of the Roma camp – as explained the police, a practice.
But the results of this “practice” affected dozens of Roma, on which “Golden Eagle” used rubber batons and tear gas, not taking into account that before them were elderly people, disabled, pregnant women and children.
Three days after these events, which clearly resemble a true genocide, most of the residents of the Roma camps did not sleep at home. They are simply terrified of a repeat of the fight, more so, that many of them were threatened not to publicise information of the events of 11 January. Young Roma hide, even from the journalists, and a patient in the last stages of tuberculosis, Yosip Tyrpak, died today in hospital.
