No translation, because I wrote the lyrics myself and I got a bit tangled up in some spots, so…

Anyway, it’s a love song, and I love this version of it. I have another version by a Hungarian Roma band, titled “Opré Phirdémè”.

I think this is some Vlax-Romani language, maybe even Kalderash, because I know Polska-Roma is really similar to Ruska-Roma and I have a really difficult time with that. Interesting!

“Cântec țigănsec de ascultare (II) / Gypsy song for listening (II)” from the album Romi și Țigani din Satul Gratia, Teleorman / Roma and Gypsies from Village of Gratia, Teleorman

This is a version of the previous song (track 1), with Romanian lyrics that refer first to the grief of the lonely convict, then – without any transition – to the joy of being a parent. Listening to the recording, the performer Napoleon and his family emphasize that this is a Gypsy song, by no means “Oriental”, and that its lyrics are “true and from the heart,” i.e. they refer to real, deep facts and emotions.

The wind is blowing through the leaves
The letters are no longer coming
Either the post office fell down
Or my mom forgot me
My brother ain’t visiting me
He left me like a dog
Woe this world, woe!

Turn into a statue, mom
Across the jail
Let the guards fall asleep
So that I can break away, Lord!

I’ve got a son, not a hundred
I’ve got my Clinton, not a hundred
And my life’s happy
Though I’m dressed in rags
It’s a real beauty!

Ori poşta s-a dărâmat
Ori măicuţa m-a uitat
Fratili nu vine la mine
M-a părăsit ca pe-un câine
Vai lume vai!

Fă-te mamă o statuie
Vis-a-vis de puşcărie
Santinelele s-adoarmă
Ca să scap şi eu măi Doamne!

Am un băiat n-am o sută
Am pă Clinton n-am o sută
Să am viaţa fericită
Chiar dacă-mbrăcat în zdrenţe
E mai mare frumuseţe!
