hello ! for years i believed my grandfather (paternal side) was romanian and my mother just told me today he was romani (from romania). i cant know for certain since i’ve lost contact with the paternal side of my family. but, if true, then i’m half british, quarter Ashkenazi jewish and quarter romani. i’m visibly white but always thought i had 100% european origins. my question is, can i identify with that part of me, or am i too estranged from the culture to? i just can’t celebrate being romanian anymore since i’m not - and i don’t want to overstep my boundaries with a culture i’ve never had contact with.
You got Romani somewhere in your personal family tree? Congrats, you’re Romani. Read “We are the romani people” by Ian Hancock. It’s a great general introduction to the Romani community, culture, and history.
Not to disregard anons family history and interest in such, but I have an issue with the response below.
Please don’t forget romanipen and how important that is to us as a people
